Lauren‘s Mexican mural is being used to raise funds, awareness & aid for the dying Mesoamerican coral reef. It is the second longest coral reef in the world. Her latest commission is a 17' x 7' mural. It is set against the backdrop of an Ancient Mayan Temple. This stunning and colorful celebration of aquatic nature is the main focus inside CEA (Centro Ecologico Akumal) in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Many opportunities to snorkel, scuba dive and literally immerse herself in the glorious beauty of the environment’s amazing sea creatures has generated a deep sense of commitment to the reef’s preservation for Lauren. They inspired her to raise awareness of its impending extinction.

My days in Mexico were filled with wonder as I explored the beauty of Akumal. I was distressed however to find that the coral was in serious trouble. I saw evidence of fish bleaching out to blend in with the dying coral. I felt a deep sense of loss. A loss not only for myself, not having seen Akumal in its pristine state, but for the sea creatures whose environment was under assault. As an artist, the thought of the loss of such extraordinary colors of fish and coral seemed unthinkable. So when my newly befriended turtle looked me deep in the eye, she sunk a hook into my soul that words could not explain. I had to do something on her behalf.

The scripture that continues to resonate within me is "As every one hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." 1st Peter 4: 9. If sea turtles aren't a gift from God, nothing is. The fact that they have survived millennia of earth's trauma gives me hope that if we can sound the trumpet and awaken the sleeping citizens of the world to cease polluting our environment, it won't be too late to revive a troubled reef.

My hope is that all will awaken to see the glorious truth, that beauty and "Life Abundant" are gifts to be received with sacred appreciation and responsible stewardship. All we can do is answer the call on our hearts and if possible raise the consciousness of humanity. We must prick the conscience of the decision makers, in the hope that together we will make the decision economically, environmentally, politically and spiritually to Choose LIFE. I choose Life, not for myself alone but for all creatures who have no voice to protest their condition and no voice to ask for help. I choose life as well for those of the Human species who feign sleep in the face of this treasure's extinction.

A Wake Up Call: All of us who are conscious of the loss of the stunning beauty of the Mesoamerican reef and its creatures must take action. We must create a concerted effort to restore and protect this magnificent ecosystem. If you would like to support this effort you may contact:
